来自网友【他他】的评论Films about friendship between two heterosexual men are often dreamt up as goofy buddy comedies, a mythopoetic drama which can tug one's heartstrings is at a premium. Belgium director Felix van Groeningen's seventh feature, THE EIGHT MOUNTAINS, co-directed with his actress wife Charlotte Vandermeersch, takes an exclusive look on a decades-spanning rapport between two Italian men of disparate makeups: Pietro (Marinelli as the adult) and Bruno (Borghi as the adult),Pietro is from Turin, a city-raised boy whose family takes their yearly vacation in the Italian Alps, where Pietro befriends Bruno when they are pre-teens. However, they stop seeing each other for many years due to a rebellious Pietro clashing with his father Giovanni (a formidable Timi), until the latter's sudden death brings Pietro back to the mountains when he is 31.To fulfill a promise to Giovanni, Bruno begins to build a house on the mountain and solicits Pietro's help. It is Pietro's inheritance but he insists the finished house belongs to both. The whole enterprise takes several months and it helps Pietro to grapple with his bereavement and regret. The pair makes a pledge to return to the house every year while the wheels of their lives roll on separately.Pietro works in a restaurant and publishes one book, but cannot settle down in a relationship and is harried by some indefinable malaise, he cannot find his footing in the vast world and visits Nepal frequently to reinvent himself. Contrariwise, Bruno knows exactly what he wants, he belongs to the mountain and his devotion cannot be compromised, neither by marriage nor offspring.THE EIGHT MOUNTAINS, as its title infers (itself a Buddhist ideology that our world is comprised of nine mountains and eight seas, with eight concentric mountains separated from one another by eight seas, and the ninth mountain, Mount Meru is at the center) is a cosmological meditation on our contemporary existence and spiritual dimension. Pietro and Bruno represent the two poles of our eternal conundrum, are you a wanderer or a mud-sticker? Eventually both men find their inner peace, whether it is to live or to perish, and it is their undimmed friendship that burns brighter than everything else. It gives us hope that a benevolent, genuine, mutually respectful connection can be actualized between any two decent human beings. While Borghi is excellently stoical and taciturn, his Bruno is a mountaineer who knows how to keep his temperament in check, most of the time, THE EIGHT MOUNTAINS leans heavily on Marinelli's charismatic sensibility to navigate through its script's mundane passages. And Marinelli, hewing to the "less is more" tenet, inhabits Pietro without an iota of the usual masculine aggression and breathes new life into a "sigma male" variety which serves as a role model for members the sterner sex to emulate. That said, the most invigorating part of the film is the enrapturing landscape, snowscape and mountain-scape which van Groeningen and Vandermeersch's team spends months in capturing. THE EIGHT MOUNTAINS is a Herculean labor of love, a lucid self-reflection on humanity's most treasured traits, a worthy recipient of the Jury Prize in Cannes, an honor shared with Jerzy Skolimowski's EO (2022).referential entries: Michelangelo Frammartino's THE HOLE (2021, 7.1/10); Pietro Marcello's MARTIN EDEN (2019, 7.8/10).English Title: The Eight MountainsOriginal Title: Le otto montagneYear: 2022Genre: DramaCountry: Italy, Belgium, France, UKLanguage: Italian, Nepali, EnglishDirectors/Screenwriters: Felix van Groeningen, Charlotte Vandermeerschbased on the novel by Paolo CognettiMusic: Daniel NorgrenCinematography: Ruben ImpensEditor: Nico LeunenCast:Luca MarinelliAlessandro BorghiFilippo TimiElena LiettiElisabetta MazzulloSurakshya PantaLupo BarbieroCristiano SassellaAndrea PalmaRating: 7.5/10
