来自网友【motoshita】的评论24-7-3I’m not sure if this is the first documentary I’ve finished. Unlike other documentaries simply recording the events, this move is decorated by various editing techniques which to a large extent aesthetically pleased the audience. The two nouns in the title greatly summarize the topic, fire (volcano) and love. As the poster suggests, the story happened between two volcanologist, Katia and Maurice, and all those volcanoes their were infatuated with. Katia and Maurice undoubtedly loved volcanoes, and they absolutely loved each other. The clue of love running through the film begins with how the couple started their first date. Then this love went simultaneously with the love to volcanoes, reflecting in all the journeys recorded to approach the volcanoes. It gave me a strong impression that both Katia and Maurice wore a particular accessory with red color every time they went on the journey, sometimes a knitted hat and sometimes a scarf. To me, the accessories implied the lava flows of the volcanoes, and that they wore the accessory strengthening their connection with each other. Just like what Katia said, ‘I like it when he walks in front of me. Since he is twice my weight, I know that wherever he goes, I can also go. I follow him because if he’s going to die, I’d rather be with him. So I follow. Occasionally, I’m in front.’It reminds me of a Japanese literature I’ve just finished, ‘The Temple of the Golden Pavilion(金阁寺)’. In the book, Yukio Mishima argued about death and beauty. I’m not so much fond of the book since the death part seemed artificial and vain. But the danger lied in observing volcanoes is genuinely existing. The lava flows are likened to the bloods and veins of the Earth, but fatal ones. The audience can perceive the beauty of volcanic eruption even through the electric screen, but we can never feel the hazard. Katia and Maurice knew the serious consequence, but they still determined to pursue the risky beauty. I see the coexistence of death and beauty in their life journeys.Another topic raised in the film is the destructive impact and human issue. Every time the volcano erupts, the couple would rush to do research. There’s no doubt that they appreciate the volcanic eruption since it brought them the experience of beauty, but what about the destruction the eruption brought to human? Maurice said he was some kind of misanthropic, so he stayed with the volcanoes to stay away from people. But he still had strong pity on human when he saw those desperate consequence because of the eruption. Then the couple left no strength left to avoid the catastrophe by spreading the knowledge about volcanoes to the public, doing those universal speeches and publishing their videos. The love goes through the whole film, not limited to love between couples, love to volcanoes, but also love to the whole humanity. That’s why the couple must be called Great.
